The Point of It

What’s the point of it?

The Nihilists ask

As they sit

Down and labor at life’s task.

That’s the point of it

The Absurdists say

As they sit

In the sun and bask.

Thus saith the Nihilists:

“There is no meaning or purpose,

So we despair

In this circus

And into the void we stare.”

“All there is and ever

Will be is death

And fever

And one quick breath.”

“Thus what is the point of this life?

Why is life worth living

In all of this strife

And hardship and pain-giving?”

Thus saith the Absurdists:

“Yes, there is no meaning,

Which we embrace.

For in spite of that, life is teeming

On earth’s rare surface.”

“Rebel

Against the absurd madness

And revel in the rebellion

With gladness.”

“There is freedom

In the absurd

And in freedom’s kingdom

Let nothing your happiness disturb.”

As Dylan Thomas wrote:

“Do not go gentle into that good night.

Old age should burn and rave at close of day;

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”
